What makes a Christmas gift ethical?
Three things, mostly.
The material. Cork fabric is harvested by stripping the bark from a cork oak, which grows back. The tree keeps standing and keeps absorbing carbon, which is why cork is described as carbon-negative rather than merely low-impact. Our cork is FSC-certified, so the forest it comes from is independently audited. Cactus leather is grown on rain-fed nopal cactus, cut back rather than uprooted, and replaces animal leather without the tanning chemistry that goes with it.
How it was made. Small batches, made by hand. Fewer units, less overstock, no seasonal landfill.
Whether it lasts. A gift that is thrown away in six months was never sustainable, whatever it was made of. Cork takes a scuff and keeps going. It is water-resistant, it does not crack the way cheap bonded leather does, and it softens rather than degrades.
That is the whole test. A gift that is made from a renewable material, made carefully, and made to last for years.

Small-batch production is not a marketing line here, it is the constraint we work within. Each piece is cut and stitched by hand, which limits how many exist and means the grain of the cork is different on every one. It also means we do not produce ahead of demand and then discount our way out of it in January.
The practical upside for a gift is that it does not look like everyone else’s. The practical downside is that popular colourways sell out and do not come back until the next batch, so December is not the month to wait.

Is cork fabric actually vegan?
Yes. Cork fabric is tree bark, backed with a textile. There is no animal product in the material and none in the manufacture, including the adhesives and the thread.
Is a cork wallet as durable as leather?
It holds up well to daily use. Cork is water-resistant, it does not crack the way bonded leather does, and it takes a scuff without marking permanently. It softens with use rather than wearing through.
What is the difference between cork and cactus leather?
Cork is harvested from the bark of a cork oak, which regrows, and has a visible natural grain. Cactus leather is made from mature nopal cactus leaves and has a smoother, more uniform finish closer to conventional leather. Both are vegan. Cork is the more textured of the two, cactus the more classic-looking.
Why is cork described as carbon-negative?
Harvesting removes the bark, not the tree. A stripped cork oak absorbs substantially more carbon while it regrows its bark than an unharvested one, so a managed cork forest takes in more carbon than the harvest costs.

What is RFID blocking, and do I need it?
It is a lining that stops a contactless card being read through the wallet. It costs nothing extra here and it removes one small thing to worry about.
Can I return a Christmas gift if it is not right?
Our returns policy runs for 30 days from purchase, and there is no separate Christmas extension. Items need to be unused, in their original condition and packaging, and return postage is paid by the customer. If you are buying early in December, that 30 days will have run out by the time it is opened, so it is worth checking the size and colour before it goes under the tree. A last thought
The best case for an ethical gift is not that it makes anyone feel virtuous. It is that a cork wallet bought this December will still be in use in five years, will not have cost an animal anything, and came from a forest that is still standing. That is a reasonable thing to put under a tree.
