Cork or cactus leather: which should you choose?

Both are animal-free, and both outlast the coated PU that gets sold as "vegan leather" in most of this category. They simply feel different.

Cactus leather is smooth and slightly glossy. Of the two, it is the closer match to animal leather in look and in hand, so it is the one to pick if you want a wallet nobody would guess was plant based.

Cork has a visible grain, a softer matte finish, and a texture that is unmistakably its own. Every piece is marked differently, so no two cork wallets are identical. Cork is harvested by stripping bark from a living tree that grows it back, so nothing is felled.

If appearance matters most to you, choose cactus. If the way the material is harvested matters most, choose cork. We would rather say that plainly than pretend the two are the same.

RFID blocking, and how we know it works

Every wallet in this collection has a shielding layer that blocks reads at 13.56MHz, the frequency used by contactless bank cards and most travel and access cards.

We test it ourselves. Before a design goes on sale, live contactless payment cards go inside the wallet and we try to take a payment from them. If the reader picks a card up, the design does not ship. That is a practical test rather than a laboratory certification, and we would rather tell you exactly what we did than quote a standards number at you.

Looking after it

Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not soak it, and never put it in a washing machine. Both materials shrug off rain and spills without marking, but neither likes being submerged. Treated reasonably, a cork or cactus leather wallet will not peel or crack the way coated PU does.

Common questions

Are cork wallets durable?

Yes. Cork resists abrasion and moisture, and it does not crack along fold lines the way cheaper synthetics do. Every wallet carries a two year warranty, and in our own daily use the material comfortably outlasts that.

Is cactus leather real leather?

No. It is made from the nopal cactus and contains no animal product at all. The name describes the finish, not the origin.

Will a bifold fit a front pocket?

The bifold is a full-size wallet and sits better in a jacket or back pocket. If you carry in a front pocket, the pop-up card holder is the one to choose.
